At Devon’s Tractor Parts, we’re excited to share our first featured restoration project: a rare Farmall 400 LP. This restoration, led by Mike from https://joesautobodytractor.com (our other business), showcases not only the challenges but also the craftsmanship involved in reviving an LP tractor—an uncommon sight in the world of vintage farming equipment.
The Farmall 400 featured in this project is powered by Liquid Propane (LP) gas, a rarity in the agricultural world. LP-powered tractors were primarily used in regions near oil fields where farmers could access propane at little to no cost. Although efficient and cost-effective, LP tractors were produced in limited quantities, making this 400 model a valuable find.
As with any restoration, this 400 LP had its share of challenges. The original components had deteriorated, and the project required a mix of reproduction parts and creative solutions to bring the tractor back to life. Here are some of the restoration highlights:
Mike took a unique approach by leaving some of the brass components unpainted, allowing them to shine. Although purists may frown upon this choice—since these parts were originally painted—it adds an elegant touch to the tractor, making it stand out. Key components like the hydraulic filter and brass lines were left untreated to highlight their detail and craftsmanship.
Every detail of this restoration was carefully considered, including new hoses, belts, oils, fluids, and rubber boots around the brakes. The tractor’s LP gas caps were difficult to source, but a used one was found, polished, and restored to complete the look. The entire dashboard, including the battery box and steering wheel, was also rebuilt from scratch.
This Farmall 400 LP restoration is more than just a repair job—it’s a tribute to the legacy of these vintage machines and the passion for preserving agricultural history. The attention to detail and the careful selection of parts highlight the artistry behind every decision, from leaving the brass untouched to ensuring mechanical soundness.
