Hello folks! Mike here from Devon’s Tractor Parts, and I couldn’t wait to share the story behind our latest restoration project—a sweet little Farmall Cub. It’s always exciting to take an old piece of history and get it running like new again, and this one was no exception. We’ve just wrapped up the project, and it’s safe to say this Cub is ready to hit the fields once more!
When we first got the Cub, it was running, but not perfectly. She had some puff to her, so we knew it was time to dive into the engine. After pulling the motor and sending it to the machine shop, we found out the rings were stuck. Turns out, the engine had been overhauled back in the '70s and hadn’t seen many hours since then. That made the job straightforward—just needed some fresh rings and new valves. Years of wear and tear had taken their toll on the valves, so we gave them a proper replacement.
The Cub’s clutch was still in good shape, so we kept that, but we went through the brakes, seals, and drop boxes—those seals always seem to leak, don’t they? The hydraulic lift was another challenge; it wasn’t holding up at all. My team gave it the attention it needed, and now it works like a charm, holding steady no matter what we throw at it.
We also swapped out the tires and rims, added a slow-moving vehicle sign for safety, and made sure everything was ready for the road. This little Cub is outfitted with a new seat, battery box, cables, American-made wire harness, and gauges. We even replaced the cracked manifold and gave her a new steering wheel for good measure.
After all the work, I have to say—this Farmall Cub runs like a dream! It fires up on the first try, every time. It’s incredible how smooth she runs after a bit of care and attention. The customer’s coming by to pick her up today, and I know they’ll be thrilled to have her back on the farm.
We’ve got some exciting projects lined up next, including a big winter restoration of a Farmall 400 LP. That tractor came from the same customer, and it’s going to be a joy to work on. If you’ve seen my other videos, you might know that I also restored the first production 140 ever sold to the public—another fantastic piece of history!
